Sallie Reynolds Matthews endured the hardships of pioneer life, living in the isolation of cattle ranches. Though her formal education was limited to the sporadic presence of country schoolteachers, Matthews wrote Interwoven: A Pioneer Chronicle, a clan story of the experiences and complex relationships that developed between two families as they built a new community in the West. Intended as a family history for the children, it has become an important source of information on the history of the Texas frontier.
