From 1942 until 1965, Mamie Sypert Burns reigned as First Lady of the Pitchfork Ranch, one of Texas’ oldest and largest ranches. Raised in Houston under the tutelage of her aunts, she brought a new dimension to the ranch with her sophistication and expectations. Prepared more for high society than ranch life, marriage brought her to West Texas to make a home. Burns was a gracious hostess and could perform any job, whether inside the house or out on the range.
