Eleanor M. Green, Professor Emerita & Dean Emerita of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Recently named Founding Dean of the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine, she also serves as Senior Advisor/Consultant for Animal Policy Group, Co-Founder and Vice President of Iron Horse Consulting & Iron Horse Farm, LLC, and Chief Medical Officer for Chou2 Pharma. She is a board-certified specialist in Large Animal Internal Medicine, having fulfilled the rigorous requirements to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), Large Animal. She is double board certified, also earning Diplomate status in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP), Certified in Equine Practice. Dr. Green received a Bachelor of Science (BS) from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Auburn University. She designed, built, and operated a veterinary practice as partner/owner.
She was recruited to become a founding faculty member of a new College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University and contributed to the development of all aspects of this burgeoning veterinary college from conception to full operation. She then became an equine clinician scientist and educator at Middlebush Equine Center at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, where she provided clinical medicine and surgery services for equine patients referred from veterinarians from many surrounding states. She was actively recruited to become the Head of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and Hospital Director of the Large Animal Hospital at the University of Tennessee, earning recognition as the first woman ever to head up a large animal department. Subsequently, she was recruited to become Chair of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and the Chief of Staff of the Large Animal Hospital at the University of Florida, again, the first woman to hold these positions at UF. Dr. Green was then recruited to accept the position as Carl B. King Dean of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University, the first woman to be appointed as dean of veterinary medicine at Texas A&M University. Recently, she was named an adjunct professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University, with her husband, Dr. Jim Heird, to help create and sustain an innovative Equine Veterinary Education Program designed to graduate uniquely trained equine veterinarians.
She has previously served as president of four national, professional organizations: the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC); American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP); American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP); and the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians (AAVC), being the first woman president of three of these organizations.
Dr. Green has owned and shown horses, primarily Quarter Horses, since her youth. A few of her successes in the show ring include – numerous Florida Quarter Horse Association year-end high point awards; numerous circuit championships; and AQHA reserve world championships in Working Hunter, Hunter Hack, and Pleasure Driving. She is currently showing in the AQHA ranch horse division on a horse she raised that has won three world championships to date. She and her husband operate a small horse breeding and performance operation.
