The Cowgirl is now accepting applications for its 2027 Charra Grant and Soldaderas to Amazonas Collegiate Scholarship, continuing the Museum’s commitment to recognizing and supporting escaramuzas across the United States.
Together, the programs will provide $15,000 in financial support to active escaramuza teams and individual riders pursuing higher education.

The Cowgirl will award five $2,000 grants to active U.S. escaramuza teams — four in the libre category and one youth team — for a total of $10,000 in team support.
The 2027 Charra Grant is generously underwritten by Las Tunas Ranches.
Applications include written and video components and are available in both English and Spanish. Teams must submit completed materials by Sunday, November 15, 2026.
The Charra Grant grew out of The Cowgirl’s efforts to celebrate and preserve the history of women in charrería while providing tangible support to the competitors carrying the tradition forward. In 2026, grants were awarded to Las Azaleas of California, Las Catalinas of Illinois, Villa de Guadalupe and Dinastía Charra of Texas, and Herencia Charra of Tennessee.
DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15, 2026

The Cowgirl is also accepting applications for the Soldaderas to Amazonas Collegiate Scholarship, the first educational scholarship established exclusively for escaramuzas pursuing higher education.
The 2027 recipient will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
The scholarship recognizes that the extraordinary commitment escaramuzas make to their sport — including the discipline, horsemanship, teamwork and leadership required to compete — is not always recognized at the same level as school-sanctioned sports and activities during traditional scholarship consideration.
Eligible applicants must be graduating high school seniors or college undergraduates who are currently enrolled or accepted at an accredited university or other higher educational institution. Applicants must also have actively competed on an escaramuza team for at least two years.
Candidates will be considered based on their career goals, leadership and community involvement, and grade point average. Applicants must submit a completed application, a letter of recommendation from a non-relative who has known them for at least two years, a headshot in escaramuza attire, and an approximately 600-word essay about a woman in charrería who inspires them and how her example has influenced their lives or future goals.
All scholarship materials must be submitted by Sunday, November 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
The inaugural Soldaderas to Amazonas Collegiate Scholarship was awarded in 2026 to Samantha Quintanar, a nursing student at Boise State University.
Through these initiatives, The Cowgirl continues the work inspired by its groundbreaking exhibition, Soldaderas to Amazonas: Escaramuzas Charras, extending the Museum’s celebration of escaramuza beyond its galleries through preservation, recognition and direct investment in the next generation of women in charrería.
